Smartcitymakassar.com. --Makassar- Smart City is a future program or concept that is rooted on sustainability and interlinked- and intertwined with integrative systems, and is mainly supported by pre-eminent information and communication technology, in order to respond, tackle, and manage the complex challenges of the cities.

One main target as Gerhard Stryi-Hipp from Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy System, Germany, is to secure and improve the quality of life. In the Smart City Platform of Technische Universität (TU) Berlin, it shows that Smart City is the response to the crucial challenges of city that deals with close connections among technical systems, city space, and the people.

Smart City combines all city modals; physical modal, human capital and social capital. Smart cities are focusing on some smart specific sectors, which are different among smart cities, as part of the cities’ advantage, such as energy, environment, transportation and mobility, governance, under the support of smart technologies.

One of the programs to build smart cities in bigger scale, either in funding, numbers of involved parties, and or implementations and actions in European Union is the project of European Innovation Partnership – Smart Cities Communities (EIP-SSC) in year 2011. From the website of EIP-SSC, European Commission has provided around 365 millions Euro for year 2012 for program in sectors of energy, transportation and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Integration of these three sectors is aimed at providing innovative solutions to six main problems, namely congestion, air pollution, high energy cost, better mobility, cleaner environment, and energy efficient. Until 2014, there at least 370 project commitments have been approved involving around 3,000 partners from 31 countries within EU. These partners come from government (36%), business (26%), research and academic institutions (16%), and individual private (2%).* (Riad Mustafa)
