The Mayor of Makassar, Moh. Ramdhan Pomanto, was interviewed by Chris Brummit,
a journalist from Bloomberg TV, at his official house, (March 3). Danny, the nickname of Moh.
Ramdhan Pomanto, challenged Chris Brummit to ask about the Vision of Makassar
and about the progress that the government has been achieving so far.
To deal with these
questions, Danny described two main points of his achievements. “The main
point, for our success, is to make Makassar vision acceptable by our people. I
will improve city’s pedestrian facility within six months. I will invite you
after six months to see the result,” said Danny to Brummit.
Further, Danny explained
that there are two ways of managing his programs. Firstly, he developed and
improved the alleys. Alley is the city pillar. Danny believes that these
improvements play a main role to solve the crucial programs of this city. Some
existing social problems come from alleys, such as crime and poverty.
Secondly, Danny created
unique slogans or taglines to all government’s programs. By these ways, the
Mayor believes that Makassar will be a world-class city combining advanced
development or technologies and local wisdoms.
There are also some
important facts about this city. Makassar has a very strategic position in
Indonesia. Some says that Makassar is the center point of Indonesia
economically or politically and as the gate of the eastern part of Indonesia.
The income per capita of
Makassar is now around 70 million Rupiahs. The hotel occupancy rate is around
80 percent. And according to Danny, Makassar own-source revenue has reached 1.3
trillion Rupiahs. It is a sharp increasing comparing to his predecessor era,
with around 600 milliard Rupiahs revenue.
Other fact is that some
best programs of Makassar have been adopted into national program, such as
Children Identity Card, Smart Card, Health Care and Telemedicine (home care),
and ‘Lorong KB’ (Alley-based Family Planning).
Danny’s presentation
amazed Brummit who then suggested the Mayor to run for the coming Mayor Election
or his second term. “You have to have two periods in order to make Makassar two
times better,” suggested Brummit.
Danny smiled to the praise and suggestion of Brummit. “It depends on Makassar people. What I have done is not about self-promotion, but solely about dedication. I just need to make the quality life in Makassar two times better,” ended Danny.* (Riad Mustafa)
