The Colourful and Diverse Makassar (2/3)



Smartcitymakassar.com. --Makassar- The breakthroughs of Karaeng Tumaparisis Kallonna has put Makassar as the trading centre within the eastern part of Indonesia, or 'Nusantara' as that period known. Even, Makassar was part of the greatest cities in Southeast Asia according to Tomi Pires' personal expedition notes.

According to Tome Pires' of (1535) 'Suma Oriental of Tome Pires', traders from Makassar made trading with Malacca, Java, Borneo, Siam all areas between Pahang and Siam. The Kingdom of Gowa allowed both locals and visitors to do their trading activities. Monopoly was prohibited by the kingdom in all circumstances.  This regulation later was a source of conflict between Gowa Kingdom and the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie), or VOC. VOC demanded a monopoly right in Makassar.

It is the character of Makassar that attracts to describe more.  During that early period of Makassar's development, it is a city of opened and tolerant. This inclusive character identifies the dynamics development of Makassar. Opened interaction, no discrimination of race, of ethnic, and of religion was the identity of the busy and famous Makassar during period of 16th Century.

Makassar, in 16th Century, was an important place for Malacca, European and Arab traders. For traders from Malacca, Makassar is the important hub to their trading activities to Maluku. Makassar is the base for traders from Europe and Arab people. The tolerant and opened character is the important capital of Makassar as the result of Sultan Alauddin (Gowa Kingdom) and Sultan Awalul Islam (Tallo Kingdom) under Gowa-Tallo Kingdom's policy. * (M.
