Treading the Gate of ASEAN Economic Community (1/3)

Smartcitymakassar.com. --Makassar- ASEAN Mayors Forum, 8-10 September 2015 has been held successfully.  During the three-days the forum all spoke about Makassar. Makassar is widely known.  With the crucial and timely theme of “Adaptive and Intelligent Cities for Integrated Borderless Prosperous Region” the forum concluded in a mutual agreement called "Makassar Declaration". A great and visionary commitment is expressed strongly by this declaration.

Within period of 8 to 10 September 2015, situated in a great and attractive panorama at two different places, at Four Point Convention (by Sheraton) Hotel and in Losari Beach, Makassar became point of focus. Located in Losari Beach, a stage stood there and was surrounded by well-organized chairs and matched with some long tables.  Losari Beach seems different as usual.  It was a long restaurant with an open beach-view. A place where an agreement has been made to nominate Makassar as the AMF Secretariat and at the same time as a place where Makassar Declaration was signed by ASEAN Mayors.

Makassar Declaration was signed at the closing day of the AMF 2015. One by one, the ASEAN Mayors signed on the eight (8)-nuance and marble-made inscribed stone. The stone was especially brought from District of (Kabupaten) Pangkep, which is known as the best place for high quality marble.  The inscribed stone covers five main points. First, AMF should support the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in order to achieve a prosperous ASEAN community. Secondly, AMF calls for ASEAN as a regional, national and local strength that rooted in its respective cities.  Thirdly, the ASEAN community pillar centers on city.  Fourthly, AMF will establish AMF Secretariat and shares information dealing with its cities developments, and fifthly, to build ASEAN University and City Youth Forum within ASEAN region.

As the host and organiser of the AMF 2015, the success of this event has put Makassar’s position into the level of leading cities in ASEAN region. Moreover, Makassar Mayor, Moh. Ramdhan Pomanto, has been actively and endlessly approaching many ASEAN cities and toes and fros to national, regional and international forums to build and develop an understanding ‘room’ about the future ASEAN cities.

The visionary and revolutionary insights of Makassar Mayor have been parts of the important agenda of AMF 2015. One of them, which is got straight response from most delegates, is to put city as one of ASEAN members and to issue a single ASEAN currency.  “To be member of ASEAN is an unquestionable and conclusive for ASEAN cities in order to move into implementation steps facing the coming MEA 2015 free trade”, said the Mayor.* (Makmur Gazali)
